Xiaomi Presses Huawei and Apple in China ’ s Crowded Premium Phone Market

NextFin News — Xiaomi is fighting for space between two entrenched rivals in China ’ s smartphone market. Huawei has reclaimed clear leadership in recent quarters through a broad lineup and domestic ecosystem advantages, while Apple continues to command high average selling prices and strong loyalty among premium buyers. Xiaomi sits further down the ranking, pressured by component inflation and the need to defend both volume and higher-end credibility.

Counterpoint data for the second quarter of 2026 placed Huawei at roughly 23 percent of China smartphone shipments, Apple at 18 percent and Xiaomi near 12 percent. Xiaomi ’ s shipments fell more than 20 percent in the period, the steepest drop among the major vendors, as the company raised prices to offset soaring memory costs and reduced lower-end volumes. QuestMobile figures on active devices as of June showed Huawei and Apple still holding the top two positions by installed base, with Xiaomi further back at about 10 percent.

The competitive dynamic differs by segment. Against Huawei, Xiaomi competes across a wide price range and increasingly in software and services. Huawei ’ s strength rests on its restored chip supply, HarmonyOS continuity and deep domestic channel presence. Xiaomi counters with aggressive pricing where possible, a large internet-of-things ecosystem and its HyperOS software layer that ties phones to cars and home devices. In the premium tier the gap remains visible: Huawei ’ s flagship series routinely set the tone for high-end Android performance and camera systems in China, while Xiaomi ’ s digital series have improved but still lag in perceived status.

Competition with Apple is more about brand and ecosystem lock-in than pure specifications. Apple ’ s iPhone series continue to dominate many single-model sales rankings in China even when overall share fluctuates. Buyers who value long software support, resale value and seamless device integration often stay within the Apple ecosystem. Xiaomi ’ s response has been gradual elevation of average selling prices, stronger imaging partnerships and the push into self-designed silicon. The newly launched Xiaomi 18 Fold, priced from 10,999 yuan and powered by the in-house Xuanjie O3 chip, is an explicit attempt to plant a flag in the ultra-premium foldable segment that Huawei already leads domestically and that Apple is now entering.

Foldables illustrate the three-way contest most clearly. Huawei has held a commanding share of China ’ s foldable market for several quarters. Xiaomi ’ s 18 Fold emphasizes a lighter form factor, large battery and the new self-developed processor as differentiators at a lower entry price than Huawei ’ s latest tri-fold models. Apple ’ s first foldable, expected to command a still higher price point, brings the strongest global brand into a category previously dominated by Asian manufacturers. Success for Xiaomi here would help shift perceptions beyond its traditional value positioning; failure would leave it squeezed between Huawei ’ s domestic premium strength and Apple ’ s aspirational appeal.

Broader structural pressures amplify the challenge. Memory and other component costs have compressed Xiaomi ’ s smartphone gross margin to 8.5 percent in the second quarter, limiting room for promotional aggression. Huawei and Apple have been better able to hold price points, partly because of stronger brand premiums and, in Huawei ’ s case, greater vertical integration. Xiaomi ’ s multi-year chip investment — now yielding the O3 for phones plus accelerators and driving chips — aims to reduce that vulnerability over time by improving differentiation and, eventually, cost control. Tangible scale benefits, however, will require several successful product generations.

In the near term Xiaomi must balance volume recovery against the need to keep climbing the price ladder. Its large global footprint and IoT base provide scale that pure premium players lack, yet in the critical China market the two leaders continue to set the terms of competition. The 18 Fold and subsequent devices built around self-developed silicon will test whether Xiaomi can convert engineering progress into sustained share and margin gains against Huawei ’ s ecosystem depth and Apple ’ s brand power. For now the data show a company still fighting uphill on both fronts.
